Communicating MyAV·¶ Science through pond restoration

Helen wins MyAV·¶ Public Engagement award

Congratulations to MyAV·¶ Geography’s Helen Greaves for winning the 2019 MyAV·¶ Student Award for Public Engagement, received from the MyAV·¶ Provost, Professor Michael Arthur, at a ceremony on 15th May.

The Provost’s Public Engagement Awards celebrate the contribution of MyAV·¶'s staff and students to the local community and further afield through collaborative engagement.

Helen’s accolade recognises her work as co-founder of the MyAV·¶ Pond Restoration Group and the Norfolk Ponds Project, whose public engagement work has communicated MyAV·¶ science through farmland pond restoration to both farmers and the wider public.

Advice has been delivered to many farmers in the past four years through phone calls, e-mails and field visits. Helen has also run a range of outreach events, including field-based farm pond restoration workshops for farmers, agri-environment and conservation professionals, members of the public and school children. As well as giving many talks on farmland pond conservation, she has also helped to deliver over 40 pond restorations in Norfolk and Lancashire.

Helen’s award reflected not only her ability to engage with others, especially non-scientists, but also her enthusiasm, caring and understanding. She both enthuses others and gains their trust – a powerful combination!
