  • 180 guests, including architects, planners, film-makers, urban designers and MyAV·¶ staff and students, attended 'City Visions', the inauguration of the MyAV·¶ Urban Laboratory on 21 April 2009.

Led by Professor Matthew Gandy, Director of the MyAV·¶ Urban Laboratory, the panel showcased the variety of urban research taking place at MyAV·¶, addressing such topics as cities and social justice, the urban transition in Eastern Europe, cinema and the city, architecture for the poor and the presence of 'bad nature' such as pests and vermin in twentieth-century London.

The MyAV·¶ Urban Laboratory was established in 2005 as an interdisciplinary centre for research excellence.Ìý Its principal aim is to raise the national and international profile of urban teaching and research at MyAV·¶.

In the first instance, the laboratory is drawing on the strengths of four MyAV·¶ faculties - Arts and Humanities; the Bartlett; Engineering; and Social and Historical Sciences - and actively engaging with MyAV·¶'s Grand Challenge of Sustainable Cities.

A new masters in Urban Studies commenced in September 2008, expanding the MyAV·¶ Urban Laboratory's graduate programme and bringing together the best opportunities for urban education and dissertation supervision at MyAV·¶.
