Background: Knights versus Allies
What is the difference between ally actions and knight actions? Karen believes it comes down to whether they ultimately create systemic change or not.
Knight - lending a hand to a single person.
Ally -Ìýlooking for systemic changes that will benefit many employees, longer term.
Actions: Knights versus Allies
- Helping individuals is laudable, but the responsibility of allies is to take actions that will have lasting, beneficial effects on systems.
- Suggest new processes that will change ingrained behaviours and create a more inclusive culture.
- Pay attention to your motivations: Focus on what will authentically support marginalized people long-term, rather than what will make you feel or look good.
