Join us for the inaugural event of the Critical Childhood Studies Centre where we will be in conversation with Dr. Ghassan Abu Sittah, Dr. Zaza Johnson Elsheikh, and Sly Blood-Coltan, to explore how colonial legacies and global resource demands—particularly for minerals and land—continue to shape childhoods across the Global South.

This event brings together speakers from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Palestine, and Sudan to explore the experiences of children growing up in regions affected by distinct historical and geopolitical forces, yet bound by common oppressive structures rooted in colonialism, foreign interests, and resource-driven wars.

Speakers will address key themes, including:

  • The impact of colonialism on childhood in the DRC, Palestine and Sudan.
  • The particular ways that children are targeted by (neo)colonial violence. 
  • The role of children in resistance, survival, and liberation movements
  • Interconnected roots of suffering, particularly resource extraction and land appropriation. 
  • Global boycott networks – connected struggles, collective resistance and the potential for greater global solidarity.

The Critical Childhood Studies Centre is a home for world-leading scholarship about childhood as a socio-political, cultural, and historical phenomenon in diverse global contexts.
