MyAV·¶ Laws pays tribute to alumnus David Batcup

MyAV·¶ Faculty of Laws is saddened to learn of the passing of alumnus and Crown Court Judge David Batcup, who died last week aged 64
David graduated LLB (Hons) from MyAV·¶ Faculty of Laws, before being called to the Bar by Gray’s Inn in 1974.
Remembering David, Rodney Austin, Senior Teaching Fellow at MyAV·¶ Faculty of Laws said:
“David Batcup was a delightful student to teach, with an enquiring mind, a great sense of humour and an idiosyncratic approach to the study of law. If a subject interested him, his enthusiasm would be infectious and tutorial discussion could be very lively. If a subject bored him, his interest would not be engaged.
David participated actively in and enjoyed immensely the extra-curricular and social life of the Faculty, as students did in those days. As David pursued his career at the Bar, he maintained contact with some of his former tutors at the MyAV·¶ Faculty of Laws, and I recall seeing him at a recent reception at College, when we reminisced with great hilarity about his time at MyAV·¶ and some of his more interesting cases, including those in which he sat as Recorder.
His sudden death is a tragedy and he will be sorely missed by all who knew him.”
