This module is open only to students on MSc Human Evolution and Behaviour who have taken ANTH0114, and to students on MSc Palaeoanthropology and Palaeolithic Archaeology and MSc Anthropology, Environment and Development who have sufficient background in statistics and quantitative methods, and have some familiarity with coding in the software R (please discuss with module convener before registering).

Module description:

Module Content:

This module builds on ANTH0114 Research Methods in Evolutionary Anthropology to provide students on the Human Evolution and Behaviour MSc course with further skills in research methods, in preparation for their independent research project (ANTH0121 Dissertation). Students will encounter different forms of advanced statistical methods, and develop/apply essential research skills through project work. Students must have taken ANTH0114 to take this module.

Indicative Topics:

The module will cover the following topics, which may be subject to variation depending on developments in academic research and the interests of the class:

  • Advanced statistical methods
  • Data collection and survey methods
  • Quantitative research design
  • Open science practices
  • Research communication

Learning Outcomes

Having completed the module, students will be able to:

  • Understand different forms of advanced statistical analyses, with the ability to seek out and identify appropriate methods for specific research questions.
  • Design and carry out quantitative research projects which are appropriate to specific research questions.
  • Understand the importance of open science practices, embedding them into research design and outputs.
  • Communicate research methods and findings through academic writing and presentations.
