Description

As an individual research project, the course provides the underlying training in conducting literature search, experiment design, collections of data and their analysis including conclusions and future work. The course is designed to develop student’s research skills and research methods through addressing the bioprocessing challenge in the production of biological therapeutics arising out of life science discoveries, from identifying, planning and executing a research project in biochemical engineering. Research topics are linked in with state of the art research areas being carried out in the department. The student will be assigned a supervisor and advisor to benefit from the interdisciplinary nature of expertise available.
Upon completion of the course, a student should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an aptitude for either practical laboratory research, computational analysis or critical review of literature
  • Gain basic research skills, gain confidence in the use of either relevant equipment and experimental techniques or computational methodologies or structured analyses of literature
  • Design methodologies and exercise creativity
  • Organize, analyse and present data with statistical analysis or appropriate benchmarking of data
  • Draw accurate conclusions from the data obtained and compare with the published literature
  • Present research findings in a technical report
