Description
This module will introduce students to the main building physics principles and their role in building’s energy requirements. The principles of conduction, convection and radiation will be introduced in the context of building design. Students will be exposed to an in-depth analysis of the impact of building envelope materials and indoor and outdoor conditions on building’s thermal performance.
The aims of the module are thus to:
ď‚· Develop an understanding of the basic principles of energy generating technologies and evaluation of their impact on the environment.
 Develop an understanding of physical principles which drive a building’s energy balance calculations, including an impact of various building/activity factors on a building’s energy performance.
 Applying fundamental knowledge and principles in determining a building’s heating and cooling loads.
ď‚· Develop ability to evaluate potential implications, such as thermal bridging and thermal mass, on the building energy performance.
ď‚· Develop ability to synthesize and analyze data by using visualization tools for simplified design calculations.
