Description

The aim of this module is to introduce students to a range of physical, biological and geochemical techniques for reconstruction of past climate and to provide an introduction to age modelling and data- model comparison. The module will cover theoretical and practical training in the use of proxies for past climate, with particular emphasis on the analysis of Quaternary sediments and other archives. Techniques to be covered will be selected from the following: basic sediment description and characterization; particle-size analysis; mineral magnetics; sediment geochemistry using XRF; carbonate geochemistry using ICP-OES; stable-isotope analysis of carbonates and organic material.
