Description

This module aims to help you engage with the material delivered in theÌýNeurology and Neuroimaging modules later in the MSc Advanced Neuroimaging course by establishing a foundational knowledge of neuroanatomy and the systems in the brain.
At the end of this module, students will be able to…

1. Neuroanatomy (N):Ìý
1.01: Ìý Identify the important anatomic structures of the brain, skull, and spine.
1.02: Ìý Describe the vascular supply of the head and spine
1.03: Ìý Demonstrate anatomical knowledge of white matter tracts and the cranial nerve nuclei in the brainstem.Ìý
1.04: Ìý Name pathological processes which commonly involve the brainstem (ischaemia, demyelination, tumours, neurodegenerative disorders) and be familiar with the clinical syndromes caused by lesions in those locations.

2. Physiology and Function (C1PF):Ìý
2.01:ÌýÌý ÌýDescribe the physiology of the CNS circulation, and the fundamentals of neuronal excitation, EEG generation and functional systems.Ìý
2.02:ÌýÌý ÌýDemonstrate familiarity with the anatomy of the visual pathways and field defects cause by lesions in specific locations
2.03:ÌýÌý ÌýName commonly encountered pathology in specific parts of the visual pathway.

3. Fetal Imaging (C1FI):Ìý
3.01:ÌýÌý ÌýDifferentiate between the appearances of normal neonatal brains and those with neonatal encephalopathy, neonatal hypoxic-ischaemic injury, seizures or stroke.
3.02:ÌýÌý ÌýDemonstrate an understanding of how, why and when different imaging modalities are used for imaging neonates
3.03:ÌýÌý ÌýDemonstrate awareness of the relevant safety considerations.
