Description

Module Content

This module explores a current analysis of one or more specific topics in syntactic theory. The module develops a specific proposal and discusses some of its advantages and disadvantages. Students are pointed to alternative views in the literature and asked to make an explicit comparison in the essay they submit for the module.

Teaching Delivery

Teaching will be delivered through a combination of lectures and seminars in which students work in small groups. The ratio between the two types of sessions varies from year to year, depending on the material taught.

Indicative Topics

Indicative lecture topics are based on module content in 2023/24, subject to possible changes.

Example topics from previous years are the encoding of grammatical dependencies, the mapping between syntax and information structure, and the relation between syntax and morphology.

Module Aims and/or Objectives

The main module objectives are:

To enable students to understand current issues in syntactic theory.

To enable students to evaluate conflicting proposals critically.

To enable them to adjust existing proposals in the light of new data and to test their adjustments.
