Description

This module is concerned with the intersection of discourse, society and culture, and with the various ways of analysing communicative practices. It offers a lens with which to explore how people use language in their everyday lives, with a focus on the conventional forms of knowledge that they draw on when engaging in meaning-making practices. A great deal of attention is paid to the historical, socio-political and economic conditions under which such conventional forms of knowledge are (re)constructed, negotiated and shaped through language and communication. Students on this module are introduced to key approaches and issues involved in analysing spoken and written discourse, and are encouraged to work on language data of their choice. The module is assessed by a coursework assignment of 5,000 words.
