Description

This module is being delivered within the MSc Population Health and is particularly recommended to those following Public Health and/or Health Policy streams. There is a clear focus on research-led teaching drawing on studies conducted with the Department of Applied Health Research and elsewhere, and case studies of contemporary health policy issues. Sessions will include guest speakers who will talk about their 'real world' experience of the issues raised during the module, drawing on their clinical practice and experience of modern day health service delivery and policy. The emphasis in sessions will also be on group discussion and collaborative working between students, with input from the teaching team and guest speakers.

This module will cover the following topics:

  • Introduction to the module & Understanding health policy
  • Equity and inequalities
  • The role of patients in healthcare delivery and organisation
  • The role of health care professionals
  • How clinicians make decisions
  • Approaches to patient safety
  • Major system change
  • Research and innovation in health care
  • Performance management and regulation
  • Future directions in healthcare delivery and research
