At The Bartlett the Design Studio is the basis of design teaching and learning. Landscape Architecture design teaching is delivered by Design Studios each taught by two or more design professionals who are academics and practitioners. Each studio presents an individual design programme that reflects their studio pedagogy and approach to innovative Landscape Architecture.ÌýBARC0116 introduces a diverse set of cognitive, spatial and technical skills essential for urban landscape design. Students will explore the recording and manipulation of terrain and spatial conditions using both traditional and digital media, including plan and section drawings, projection drawings, and three-dimensional physical models. Students will also use analytic mapping techniques to investigate site processes at different scales. These methods will help students generate and think about their ideas and to communicate them to others in ways that are informative and engaging.Ìý

This studio-based module is delivered through weekly studies and design tasks in group working and tutorial settings augmented by site work and visits. In addition to working in groups, where you will be able to combine efforts towards observing and recording the sites, individual thinking is critical leading up to your design project for BARC0117.Ìý

Design projects are informed by and developed alongside the Landscape Inhabitation and Environmental Systems (BARC0115) module. Development of design projects is supported by the Skills and Workshops programme that delivers tutorials on various 3D and 2D, digital and analogue tools for interpreting, representing, and designing landscapes.Ìý

Landscape Design 1 - is the first of three design studio-based modules. It will give you an introduction to:Ìý

• landscape and site appraisal via site visitsÌý

• processes of making and forming natural and constructed landscapes via introductory lectures and design projectsÌý

• techniques of landscape representation and design processesÌý

• mapping and data handling using GIS, open source data handling, ArcView or similar are introduced in an intensive workshop Landscape Design 1Ìý

The aims are to:Ìý

• provide an introduction to landscape designÌý

• provide an introduction to representation and design techniques including 2D and 3D visual and manual skillsÌý

• to introduce techniques of iterative and reflective design development which synthesizes professional and technical and environmental issuesÌý

• knowledge and understanding of the visualization of proposals including two dimensional and three-dimensional and time-based contextsÌý

• skill in presenting design work in a portfolioÌý
