Description

Aims:

The module aims to give students experience of undertaking and completing a large piece of work aimed at making a novel research contribution, applying techniques learned throughout the programme, including the technical skills of analysis, design and implementation.Ìý

Intended learning outcomes:

On successful completion of the module, a student will be able to:

  1. Conduct a detailed research project.Ìý
  2. Plan and execute research activities in a systematic and organised way.Ìý
  3. Critically evaluate and review their work and the work of others.Ìý
  4. Effectively communicate their research work and findings.Ìý

Indicative content:

There is no set syllabus for this module, as each student will undertake a research project on an appropriate topic, as agreed with their project supervisor.

At the outset of the module, each student will identify a member of the Software Systems Engineering (SSE) or Advanced Research Computing (ARC) research groups who is willing to act as their project supervisor. In collaboration with their supervisor, they will then specify and detail an appropriate project of mutual interest.

Each student will be responsible for organizing themselves and their own work, with advice from their project supervisor. They will be expected to meet regularly with their supervisor over the course of the project.

Students will be encouraged to start early and to begin meeting with their supervisor during terms 2 and 3, however the project will become their full-time focus after the main summer examination period (which ends in May.)
