Description
This module will apply virtual work and flexibility analysis to develop conceptual and analytical understanding of new and existing structural systems. The application of soil mechanics to foundations investigation and design and forensic procedures will be examined. The module will include a selection of topics such as: • Structural analysis of building engineering components • Analysis and design of determinate and indeterminate structures • The effect of tolerance, fit, settlement and temperature • The analysis of bending, shear and torsion in beams • Foundation working loads and settlements • Analysis and design of shallow and deep foundations • Hygro-thermal performance of, and interaction with, ground floor structures and foundations • Site investigations using geotechnical methods • Evaluation of existing structures.
