  • A group of thirteen senior academic staff from Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KNU) in Almaty, one of Kazakhstan's leading universities, is currently attending an intensive two-week Teacher Development Course at MyAV·¶.

Many of the course participants are holders of this year's 'Best Teacher' awards from the Kazakh government and have used funding from their 'continuing professional development grant' to take part in the MyAV·¶ programme, which features English language tuition, workshops focusing on teaching and learning strategies and the use of new technologies in curriculum delivery. Participants also have the opportunity to meet with MyAV·¶ colleagues from other relevant departments and academic disciplines for the exchange of ideas and best practice.

The course is a collaboration between the MyAV·¶ Language Centre, the MyAV·¶ Centre for the Advancement of Learning and Teaching (CALT), the MyAV·¶ Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning Languages of the Wider World (LWW-CETL) and the MyAV·¶ Learning Technologies Support Service (LTSS).

Professor Gulnas Akhemetova, the Vice-Rector of Al-Farabi KNU, first visited MyAV·¶ in May 2007. During discussions with Professor Michael Worton, Vice-Provost (Academic and International) and other MyAV·¶ staff, a number of areas for possible collaboration were identified. The Teacher Development Course is the first of these to come to fruition.

Professor Worton and Professor Akhemetova will be meeting during the current visit to discuss the further development of the relationship between MyAV·¶ and Al-Farabi KNU.
