A research team including the MyAV·¶ International Centre for Evidence-Based Oral Health (ICEBOH), based in the Unit of Periodontology at the Eastman Dental Institute, has been awarded a prestigious international research prize.

The team's report, 'Full-mouth disinfection for the treatment of chronic periodontitis' won the 2007 Cochrane Prize from the German Cochrane Centre and the Deutsche Krankenversicherung. It is the first time the German Cochrane Centre, part of the Cochrane Collaboration, has rewarded a study in oral health.

The Cochrane Collaboration funds systematic reviews of the effects of healthcare interventions and maintains a library of the evidence it gathers. It is a highly respected source of data for decision-makers.

The team conducting the study is made up of Jörg Eberhard (University of Schleswig-Holstein), Søren Jepsen and Pia-Merete Jervøe-Storm (University of Bonn), Ian Needleman (ICEBOH) and Helen Worthington (University of Manchester). They share a prize of €10,000.

Dr Ian Needleman, director of ICEBOH, said: "We strive for excellence in the quality of our systematic reviews and it is great to receive such a ringing endorsement. Full-mouth disinfection is a highly controversial topic in oral heath research and we hope that the results from this review will clarify its role in treatment and help to improve patient care."
