MyAV·¶ has four finalists in three categories of the London Development Agency's 'London Knowledge Transfer Awards'. The winner of one of the categories, the 'Knowledge Transfer Champion Award', will be determined by a public vote which closes at noon this Friday, 21 November. Dr Jeff Skinner from MyAV·¶ Advances is MyAV·¶'s nominee for this award, which acknowledges 'a successful individual working in business development or knowledge-transfer at a London Higher Education Institution, Further Education or other research organisation who has demonstrated outstanding achievements and business acumen in their field'.

Dr Jeff Skinner

Dr Skinner is the MyAV·¶ Director for Corporate Alliances, and has been central to knowledge transfer and commercialisation activities at MyAV·¶ for sixteen years. He has played crucial roles in the development of MyAV·¶ Business, MyAV·¶ Consultants and latterly as Commercial Director. During that time he has helped spread best practice in all aspects of knowledge and technology transfer through key roles with the leading professional bodies PRAXIS and ASTP. Since autumn 2008, Jeff has been Executive Director of the Foundation for Entrepreneurial Management at the London Business School but maintains his links to MyAV·¶ through continued work with MyAV·¶ Advances.

The Other MyAV·¶ Nominees

The London Knowledge Transfer Awards cover six categories in all. The shortlisted entries were announced on 17 November, and the other three nominees from MyAV·¶ are:

Stanmore Implants Worldwide (SIW) and the MyAV·¶ MSc in Financial Computing, both nominated for Commercial Deal of the Year Award, which recognises the commercialisation potential of Higher Education Institutions.

SIW is a successful spin-off company from MyAV·¶'s Centre for Biomedical Engineering. SIW is an innovative orthopaedic business focused on saving and restoring the function of limbs and joints and was sold in February 2008 to a syndicate led by Abingworth Management and MDY Healthcare plc in a deal worth £12.5m. The MyAV·¶ MSc in Financial Computing, led by Chris Clack (Director, Financial Computing Programme, Computer Science) has successfully brought MyAV·¶ together with a series of top-tier partners, including Credit Suisse, Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Sachs and Thomson Reuters. The partners have provided generous financial support to help deliver the programme as well as funded the development of the Virtual Trading Floor, a physical space that models a City dealing room. EuroTempest, which has been nominated for the Environmental Science Award (sponsored by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)), which acknowledges successful knowledge-transfer activities in the arena of the environmental sciences, such as climate change, environmental influences on human health and the genetic make-up of life on earth.

EuroTempest, a MyAV·¶ spin-off led by Frank Roberts (Space and Climate Physics), provides innovative weather risk products to benefit the warning and management of weather risk across Europe. EuroTempest's services are of specific benefit to insurers, reinsurers, risk managers and loss adjusters. EuroTempest can also provide services that are relevant to companies and organisations in other industry sectors whose performance is influenced by extreme high winds.
