MyAV staff and alumni recognised in 2021 New Year’s Honours

Congratulations to all members of the MyAV community who have been recognised in the 2021 New Year’s Honours.

MyAV staff and alumni recognised in 2021 New Year Honours

Professor David Ormerod QC (MyAV Laws) has been appointed a CBE for services to criminal justice.

AProfessor of Criminal Justice at MyAV and co-director of the MyAV Judicial Institute, Professor Ormerod is also a Deputy High Court Judge and between 2010 and 2019 served asthe Criminal Law Commissioner for England and Wales.

Professor Ramani Moonesinghe (MyAV Surgery & Interventional Science) has been madean OBE for services to anaesthesia, perioperative and critical care.

She is Head of the Centre for Perioperative Medicine and Head of the Department of Targeted Intervention, both at MyAV.Professor Moonesinghe is also the NHS England / NHS Improvement’s National Clinical Director for Critical Care and an honorary Consultant Anaesthetist at University College London Hospitals NHS Trust.

Commenting on her award, Professor Moonesinghe said: "I am immensely gratefulfor the support I've received from my friends and colleagues at MyAV and MyAVH.

"I am lucky to work with so many phenomenal local colleagues drivingforwardperioperative care, and to have had the chance to play a small role in the national effort to support critical care in this incredibly challenging year."

Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Professor Mark Emberton, added: “Ramani is a model clinical academic - greatly valued as a great doctor, hugely admired as an inspirational researcher.”

Professor Mohan Edirisinghe (MyAV Mechanical Engineering) has been awardedan OBE for services to biomedical engineering.

He is Bonfield Chair of Biomaterials at MyAV and is botha Fellow of The Royal Academy of Engineering in the UK and a Fellow of The European Academy of Sciences.

On receiving his honour, Professor 徱Բ: "I am indebted to MyAVand in particularto MyAV Mechanical Engineering from where I have been able to rapidly propagate my research on healthcare and manufacturing internationally to a wide interdisciplinary audience, this has enabled me to get this honour."

Professor Lorraine Sherr (MyAV Institute for Global Health) has been made an MBE for services to vulnerable children and families.

A Professor of Clinical and Health Psychology, she runsthe Health Psychology Unit at MyAV. At the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic as part of the UKRI Global Challenges Research Fund team, Professor Sherr and others, put together COVID-19 parenting tips, reachingover 134 million users and keeping the mental health and child development issues to the forefront amidst isolation and lockdown.

On receiving her honour, Professor Sherr said: "I am quite humbled by this award as my work is a mosaic put together with the endeavours of many.

"This will only spur me on to continue: when we obliterate vulnerability then my work will be done.Until then it is our collective responsibility to ensure that no family, no child and no-one who is destitute stands alone;there must always be a resource to provide for them and their children."

  • Professor Simon Baron-Cohen (MyAV Life Sciences 1985) – Knights Bachelor for services to people with autism
  • Christopher Le Brun (MyAV Slade School 1974) – Knights Bachelor for services to the arts
  • Guy Weston, Chair of the Garfield Weston Foundation – Knights Bachelor for services to philanthropy and charity
  • Professor Francesca Happé (MyAV Psychology 1992) – CBE for services to the study of autism
  • Professor Usha Goswami (MyAV Institute of Education 2015) – CBE for services to educational research
  • Richard Ross, Chair of the Rosetrees Trust - CBE for services to philanthropy during Covid-19
  • Professor Eleanor Stride (MyAV MechanicalEngineering (BEng) 2001 (MPhil) 2005) – OBE for services to engineering
  • Professor Laurence Alison (MyAV Psychology 1993) – MBE for services to critical incident handling and to the NHS during Covid-19
