Celebrating your Academic Rep's successes

4 March 2024

Your Academic Reps are elected to represent your academic interests at a Course, Department and Faculty level. Find out what they have been up to on your behalf.

Students' sitting outside Engineering building

We’re really proud of what our Academic Reps have achieved in partnership with students and staff this academic year. Here is a selection of whatÌýyour Academic RepsÌýhave been up to:

You can find out who your Academic Reps are by looking at the .Ìý

Arts & Humanities,ÌýSchool of Slavonic and East European Studies

I spoke to the head of languages and culture, the head of the Russian course, and other teachers of Russian languages modules. This was to share the concerns and feelings of coursemates, request any adjustments possible to the classes, and to request for additional teaching materials to be written or made available. A lot of additional materials were shared as a result of this.

Arts & Humanities, School of European Languages, Culture and Society

In response to student feedback, Module Convenors organised debates to address a lack of oral practice for language courses.

Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment,ÌýBartlett School of Sustainable Construction

I actively collaborated with teachers to explore options for students who commute from a considerable distance to the school. While it was challenging to make immediate changes due to the advanced scheduling of classrooms six months prior, we successfully implemented a more compact schedule starting from the second semester. This adjustment aimed to help students living far from the campus better adapt to their school life.

Brain Sciences,ÌýDivision of Psychology & Language Sciences

By making myself known in the cohort (of approximately 40 people), students are now recognising us as a reliable source of support and provide us with feedback. We have achieved an almost 50% response rate for the SSCC feedback in this term, with most of them being detailed written feedback.

Engineering,ÌýScience, Technology, Engineering and Public Policy

As an Academic Rep, I have been able to get opportunities for our cohort to work in labs to create prototypes as this was an important aspect of the course that people wanted. I am still working on discussing workload management and deadlines as this is another concern of the cohort.

Engineering,ÌýSchool of Management

I’ve proactively been in touch with my classmates to find out about any difficulties they may be having with the modules. I have been able to speak for the class by carefully listening toÌýtheir worries and problems and successfully communicating them to management for a solution.

IOE,ÌýSocial Research Institute

I have worked with other Faculty and Departmental Reps to have microwaves provided to students at the IOE.

Laws

I created an anonymous electronic feedback platform, where students could raise issues and concerns, they have with regards to teaching and mental health.

Life Sciences,ÌýSchool of Pharmacy

I sent out a year-group survey of which around 80% of the cohort participated in, showing how collaborative our year is, to bring about change. Highlighting the sheer rapport and connection, I as lead Rep, was able to form with them!

Mathematical & Physical Sciences

We are currently working on increasing the diversity of outreach efforts across the lab to ensure all departments are represented equally, however, this is ongoing. It is too soon to see any definitive successes at this stage.

Mathematical & Physical Sciences,ÌýDepartment of Chemistry

I gave positive feedback on some of the modules that the programme currently has and also raised some awareness of timetabling issues that students are facing.

Medical Sciences,ÌýDivision of Medicine

I managed to inform students about progress and kept them up-to-date about key information. At the time of writing, I am anticipating the largest talent show and networking event in the Faculty, which has been planned for over 10 years but has never happened. If this does take place in twoÌýweeks'Ìýtime, it would be the largest event in the faculty and a huge success for everyone as it breaks the barriers between departments and brings everyone together.

Medical Sciences, Division of Surgery and Interventional Science

I have assisted in the organization and promotion of a talent show of medical science.

Population Health Sciences,ÌýMyAV·¶ EGA Institute for Women’s Health

Organised an institute-wide Valentine's social event to promote bonding among students in all IfWH programs, had a great turnout and lots of positive feedback following the event!

Social and Historical Sciences,ÌýHistory

Trying to revive the History common room to provide a safe and communal space for history students to study and socialise, fostering a sense of community in the department.

Social and Historical Sciences, History

I have successfully gathered feedback and brought issues with certain modules to the attention of the relevant people.

Social and Historical Sciences, Political Science

I have strengthened the ties with the undergraduate and Faculty Representative positions in Social and Historical Sciences (SHS). I worked closely with Cathy Elliot to advertise, promote, and facilitate dialogue on the assessment project she has been leading. I've alsoÌýworked on improving career service visibility and reformulated the terms of reference for Academic Reps and created a document outlining guidance on elections for courseÌýconvenors which is currently undergoing MyAV·¶U revision and is due to be published for the next academic semester. I'm working with the UGT SHS Faculty Rep on producing a faculty-wide newsletter to increase department interconnectivity. I've informed myself and started creating a system whereby individuals inÌýdepartments are able to opt-in to other departments' careers Moodles if they are interested in that department professionally.

Social and Historical Sciences, Political Science

I supported new PGT students by being a contact point for all things MyAV·¶, especially regarding the consequences of failure, academic misconduct, extenuating circumstances, etc. I organised events with my programme lead and co-course Rep; worked on part-timer diets and Continuous Module Dialogue (CMD) with my department; communicated effectively with my co-Reps as lead Rep; ensured representation for the second-year part-timers in my department andÌýbuilt relationships across the staff and student body.
